Collagen gel masks look a bit different from the usual paper sheet masks. They're thicker, jelly-like and slightly see-through, and you wear them for much longer. The first time you open one, it's normal to wonder which way round it goes and how long you're actually meant to leave it on. This guide covers all of that, plus a few tips that make a real difference.
What is a collagen gel mask?
A collagen gel mask is a face-shaped sheet made from a firm, hydrating gel instead of fabric. The gel is packed with ingredients that slowly melt into your skin while you wear it. Ours, the Collagen Facial Mask, contains PDRN, hydrolysed collagen and niacinamide.
The clever part is that it shows you when it's done. The mask starts off pink and cloudy and gradually turns clear as the ingredients absorb. When it's transparent, it's finished.
A quick word on collagen
Collagen in a mask won't replace the collagen your skin makes on its own. The molecules are too large to work that way. What it does do is hold a lot of water against your skin, which leaves it looking plumper, smoother and more dewy. That's the "bouncy" feeling people love about these masks. The PDRN and niacinamide help with hydration and a more even-looking tone on top of that.
How to use a collagen gel mask, step by step
- Cleanse your face and pat it mostly dry. The mask sticks best to skin that's clean and only slightly damp.
- Apply a serum first (optional, but worth it). A few drops of the PDRN Peptide Serum underneath gives the mask something to "seal" in. This is the prep-and-seal idea behind our Glass Skin Ritual.
- Peel off the protective film. The gel has a clear plastic layer on each side. Remove one side, place the mask on your face, then peel off the other.
- Line up the eyes first, then the nose and mouth, and smooth the mask outwards from the centre so there are no air bubbles.
- Leave it on until it turns clear, which is usually 3 to 4 hours.
- Peel it off and pat in any leftover essence. There's no need to rinse. Follow with a light moisturiser if your skin feels like it needs it.
How long should you leave it on?
This is the question we get asked most. Unlike a 15-minute sheet mask, a collagen gel mask is designed to be worn for a few hours, until it becomes transparent. For most people, that's around 3 to 4 hours.
A few things can change the timing:
- Dry skin tends to absorb it faster.
- A warm room speeds things up; a cold one slows it down.
- A thick layer of serum underneath can make it slide around, so keep that step light.
If the mask has turned clear early, it's fine to take it off. If parts are still cloudy after four hours, that's fine too. Just remove it.
When's the best time to wear it?
Most people put it on in the evening while they're relaxing at home, then take it off before bed. It's also great the evening before an event, as your skin tends to look its plumpest the next morning.
Because it's quite snug, we don't recommend sleeping in it. It can shift around and you're likely to wake up with it on your pillow.
How often should you use one?
Once or twice a week is the sweet spot. That's why our masks come in packs of 1, 4 or 8. Four masks is a month of weekly use; eight gives you two a week.
Tips for the best results
- Chill it first. Pop the sealed pouch in the fridge for 15 minutes. It feels lovely, especially on puffy mornings.
- Don't stretch it too hard when you're positioning it. It's soft, but it can tear.
- Skip strong actives the same night. If you use retinol or exfoliating acids, save the mask for a different evening.
- Patch test on a small area first if you have sensitive skin or a fish allergy (PDRN is derived from salmon DNA).
Common questions
Can I reuse the mask?
No. Each mask is single use, as the active ingredients have absorbed into your skin by the time it turns clear.
Can I put makeup on afterwards?
Yes. Pat in any leftover essence, give it a few minutes to settle, then apply your SPF and makeup as normal.
Does it suit oily skin?
Generally yes. The gel is hydrating rather than oily. If you're prone to breakouts, start with once a week and see how your skin responds.
